It’s very much left open to speculation. True romantics believe that because a man is immune to drowning once he has kissed a mermaid, Philip will live happily with Syrena beneath the sea (or wherever they may go).

Other people like to read into the fact that Syrena is in fact a mermaid, and because we don’t know exactly what happened at the end, she may have lured poor Philip to his death.

All of these theories are already being explored pretty deeply in fanfiction. I personally believe that because Syrena saved him and Philip saved her, as well as both of them being “different,” that they had a happy ending.

Philena/Syrip forever!

How did Barbossa get hired by the British when he had helped the crew of the Black Pearl completely decimate the East India Trading Company?

Pirates were often offered and granted pardons by the government in times of war or recruitment. The only reason pirates were allowed to continue commandeering ships in the Caribbean was because many countries’ governments saw them as a “reserve navy,” so to speak.

It would be effortless for a “former” pirate to become a Privateer in the British Naval fleet.
